Decline in International US University Enrollment

In American universities, there have been decreases in international student enrollments, down 1.4% this fall. This is the first decrease in three years for the universities. This is likely due to stricter immigration policies in the states and pressures to tighten policies with foreign students in the higher education system.

There are almost 5,000 international students who are enrolled in to school in the fall, and with total enrollments increasing by 1% this was a significant decrease, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Graduate programs enrollments are almost 10,000 students fewer than the previous year at 6% fewer enrollments. From 2020 to 2024, there was a 50% increase.

The American higher education system is going through changes, and this is going to be new challenges for the industry. Recent changes in the tax laws are going to put and end to the period tax sheltering universities and decrease funds that they have access to.

The American universities have been in a position to have international students in order to have them pay full tuition to the school, and students also pay because they have the funds to do this. 51% of international students were family financed, according to the IIE.

New policies have put international students at a disadvantage when being targeted for new immigration controls. There are new travel restrictions, delays when processing visas, and the students may be deported if they are involved with campus protests.
